CA_MonoLake - 24

In California, this is Mono Lake, which is just east of Yosemite Nat'l Park. Mono Lake has a salt content twice that of the oceans. Taken at the South Tufa area of Mono Lake, these formations are called "tufa" and were formed by underwater springs that were high in mineral content. They were originally underwater, but since Los Angeles diverted several of Mono Lake's inlets (for city water), the lake has dropped drastically in depth. (10/12/2004)
