OR_CraterLakeNP - 37

Crater Lake in Oregon, the deepest lake in the United States, and seventh deepest in the world. It's known for its incredibly blue, pure, clear water. Formed in the caldera left by a collapsed volcano (Mt. Mazama), the lake has no inlets or outlets (rivers or streams), so the water comes exclusively from rain and snow (the area gets roughly 42' of snow annually). This was taken from the top of the rim around the lake, which runs roughly 1600-2000' feet above the water's surface. Some of these pictures show Wizard Island, which is a smaller volcano that has formed in the lake, and stands roughly 800' above the surface. (09/28/2004)
