In Northern California, at Lassen Volcanic National Park, this is the Lassen volcano. Before Mt. St. Helens erupted (in 1980), Lassen was the last major volcanic eruption in the continental U.S. (in 1916). In the lower right, you can see the start of a trail heading up to the peak. I made it most of the way up (above the top row of trees), but since I was still recovering from a cold, I decided not to push my luck to the top (the peak is a bit over 10,000 feet). (10/01/2004)
