In Northern California, at Lassen Volcanic National Park. Before Mt. St. Helens erupted (in 1980), Lassen was the last major volcanic eruption in the continental U.S. (in 1916). This is at the "Bumpass Hell" section of the park, which was named after Kendall Vonbook Bumpass, who discovered it in the 1860's. Bumpass lost a leg when he stepped into a boiling thermal pool. And yet, as this picture shows, there are still people *stupid* enough to get off the boardwalk trail (despite countless signs saying to stay *on* the trail), and actually walk around the boiling pools. It's a wonder (and maybe a shame?) that they didn't slip in. The truly sad part is that other people will have to see the idiot's footprints, probably for years. (10/01/2004)
