CA_DriveThruTree - 1

This is the "Chandelier Tree" (also known as the "Drive-Thru Tree", in Leggett, California. The tree is 315' tall, 21' in diameter, and over 2000 years old. The hole was cut through it in the 1960s (?), and surprisingly doesn't seem to have affected the tree's health at all. Looking at the cut, though, it appears that the tree already had a substantial hole in it (likely from fire), which was enlarged and "squared off" to allow a car to pass through. With my canoe and bike on top, my truck wouldn't fit, though. This is a stop I wouldn't have made, except it was only 1/4 mile out of my way. (10/04/2004)
