UT-ArchesNP - 16

Arches National Park in Utah, this shows the "Balanced Rock" formation. From one direction it looks somewhat precarious, but from another direction you wonder why it hasn't already fallen. It's bigger than it looks: The total height of the formation is 128 feet, the boulder's height is 55 feet, and the boulder's weight estimated at 3500 tons. There was previously a similar, smaller formation "Chip-Off-The-Old-Block" until it toppled in the winter of 1975-76. (11/08/2004)
